What is a trinary serial number?
A trinary serial number is an eight-digit serial containing exactly three distinct digits. The digits may appear in any order and any number of times, as long as no fourth digit appears. For example, 00112233 contains only 0, 1 and 2.
Trinary vs binary and true trinary
Binary uses exactly two different digits; trinary uses exactly three. True trinary is a narrower collector phrase for a serial made only from 0, 1 and 2. The site's Trinary detector counts any three digits, so 24824824 qualifies even though it is not true trinary. A serial such as 00112233 meets both the general Trinary rule and the narrower 0/1/2 description.
| Label | Site rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Binary | Exactly two distinct digits | 00110011 |
| Trinary | Exactly three distinct digits | 00112233 |
| True trinary | Common narrower term: only digits 0, 1 and 2 | 00112220 |
Trinary examples and non-examples
Keep the complete eight digits when checking a serial. Leading zeros count as one of the distinct digits, and a repeated arrangement can match other patterns as well.
| Serial | Result |
|---|---|
| 00112233 | Trinary; leading zeros retained |
| 88686664 | Trinary; digits 8, 6 and 4 |
| 01201201 | Trinary and a repeated cycle |
| 00110011 | Binary, not trinary |
| 12345678 | Eight distinct digits, not trinary |
How rare is a trinary serial number?
Choose the three digits in 120 ways. For each chosen set, 3^8 - 3(2^8) + 3 = 5,796 strings use all three digits. That gives 120 × 5,796 = 695,520 qualifying strings among 100,000,000, or about 1 in 144. The detector's former hub display of 1 in 400 was inconsistent with its exactly-three-digits rule.
These are mathematical odds for eight-digit strings, not a count of notes printed or an estimate of collector demand.
How much is a trinary serial number worth?
The existing sold-price source has no publishable Trinary bands. The condition rows below are intentionally blank because no verified band and sample size are recorded. A trinary label alone does not establish a sale price.
For the site's broader pricing method, see the fancy serial number value guide and check for a star with the star note lookup.

What raises or lowers a trinary note's value?
- A trinary that is also a radar or repeater has a second recognizable shape; no verified data here quantifies an added premium.
- A star note may attract a different buyer, but no trinary star-note band is recorded.
- A low serial can combine with trinary, though each feature needs comparable sale evidence.
- Denomination and grade affect buyer interest and note value. Compare similar denominations and condition before deciding.
Should you keep, sell, or buy a trinary note?
Treat the three-digit pattern as a point to investigate, not a guaranteed premium. Keep or buy only when the specific arrangement, note condition and comparable completed sales justify it. If it is an ordinary circulated note without a stronger feature, spending it can be reasonable.
How to check your serial
Write down all eight digits, including zeros at the start, and count the distinct digits. Exactly three matches the site's Trinary rule. Then check for a radar, repeater, low serial or star-note combination.
Check it with the fancy serial number checker and compare it with the Binary guide and Ladder guide.

What is a trinary serial number?
An eight-digit serial containing exactly three distinct digits, in any arrangement.
What is a true trinary note?
Collectors often use true trinary for a serial containing only 0, 1 and 2. The site's general Trinary rule accepts any three distinct digits.
How rare is a trinary serial number?
The detector rule yields 695,520 strings among 100,000,000, or about 1 in 144.
How much will a trinary serial number sell for?
There is no publishable verified Trinary value band in the site's sold-price data. Check completed sales for the same denomination, condition and pattern overlaps.
Are trinary notes worth more than binary?
Trinary uses three distinct digits and binary uses two, but that distinction alone does not establish a price. Compare completed sales rather than assuming one category is worth more.
Should I buy a trinary serial number bill?
Only if you like the note and its price is supported by comparable completed sales. Avoid treating an asking price as proof of value.
Where can I sell a trinary note?
You can consider a coin and banknote dealer, a collector marketplace or an auction house. Compare their fees and recent completed sales before listing.
